I have chosen an organic lifestyle (though I do cut myself some slack during pregnancy) that is a modified version of The Makers Diet and The Eat Clean Diet. Both of these promote awareness of food consumption. It caused me to stop and really assess what I was putting into my body AND the reasons why I should. I 100% recommend these books, as a reference point to starting a food-style change.

That being said, I found a couple lists to help us along the way. I recognize that my budget doesn't always allow me to buy organic, so I refer to these lists when I need to be money-wise.
The Dirty Dozen:
(fruits/vegs that have the highest level of pesticide levels: AKA don't buy these)
1. Peaches
2. Apples
3. Bell peppers
4. Celery
5. Nectarines
6. Strawberries
7. Cherries
8. Kale
9. Lettuce
10. Imported grapes
11. Carrots
12. Pears
The Clean:
(fruits/vegs that have a low level of pesticide residue: AKA it's ok to buy sometimes)
1. Onions
2. Avocados
3. Corn
4. Pineapple
5. Mangoes
6. Asparagus
7. Sweet peas
8. Kiwi
9. Cabbage
10. Eggplant
11. Papaya
12. Watermelon
13. Broccoli
14. Tomatoes
15. Sweet Potatoes

Thanks for this! I was JUST talking about this with Tom the other day. I always get confused when buying fruits/veggies. I am big on buying local goods instead of produce that has been sitting around awhile in the store. I always try to buy fruits that aren't peelable organic. If you can take the skin off (ie Banannas, oranges, pineapple etc.) than you don't need to buy organic? So with produce,do you just buy fresh? Or do you ever buy in can/frozen? What about the bagged salads? I have been trying so hard to get us on a healthier lifestyle. It makes you seriously feel better when you do. Seeing that you are so busy with two kids, and yet you still make time for a healthier lifestyle,....then I know I can do it too. Thanks for the encouragement! You should continue to add more of your tips on here. :)
I do buy frozen; but this year I have been buying things at the peak part of their season and wash/prep to then freeze. This is way cheaper than buying frozen (which is reasonably priced). I do not buy a lot of canned goods, mostly because of the salt content. The only canned I always have on hand is fire-roasted tomatoes...there is just something about them that adds great flavor. Bag Salads, occasionally I buy them, but it's cheaper to buy the leafy greens and wash it myself.
Thank you for the encouragement! I encourage you to continue on your healthy meal prep too!
I just saw a list like this the other day in a magazine. I wanted to rip it out but I'm sure the receptionist in the dentist's office would have frowned at me for that! Ha! So thanks for typing this up! I'm going to add it to my notebook for grocery shopping tips! Thanks sista!
